Social Studies Teaching Certification for Grades 7-12 qualifies you to teach across the full range of Social Studies courses in Texas schools. Our graduates earn certification in all areas tested by the state (exam #232), preparing them for positions in history, government, economics, and geography. At no additional cost, students may also earn a Spanish biliterate certificate or an English as a Second Language (ESL) certification鈥攃redentials required by many South Texas districts鈥攆urther expanding their career opportunities and competitiveness in the job market.

Extensive Classroom Experience

Students gain classroom experience early and often through structured fieldwork, including observing, co-planning, and teaching in diverse schools across multiple districts and grade levels.

Clinical Teaching Residency

In their final year, students complete a full-year clinical teaching residency, spending 70 full days in the classroom alongside experienced mentor teachers, so graduates enter their first teaching job with real classroom experience. A paid residency option is available through partnerships with local districts.

Our curriculum integrates Native, Mexican-American, African-American, and other underrepresented histories across U.S., Texas, and World History courses, and prepares you to teach diverse classrooms with rigor, relevance, and cultural awareness.

Charles Butt Scholarship for Aspiring Teachers

好色先生 is one of only 10 programs in Texas selected for the Raising Texas Teachers initiative. The Charles Butt Scholarship provides up to $8,000 per year, renewable for four years, plus mentorship, training, and a statewide educator network.

    Supports bilingual and bicultural education through advocacy, networking, and professional development.

    A statewide organization designed to help students explore the teaching profession, develop leadership skills, and engage in service-oriented projects.
